DIY Tricks To Clean Fine Jewellery At Home

There are several DIY tricks to clean your gold and precious jewellery at home. You don’t need to run to your jeweller every time your trinkets get dirty. Below are the different ways to clean your different types of jewelleries.

Method to clean gold jewellery

What you will need

• Boiling water
• Colander
• Soft cloth
• Old cotton t-shirt
• Microfiber cloth

How to do it

While boiling water, place your jewellery piece in a colander which fits inside a pot. Don’t use a metal colander as it might cause scratches on gold. Now pour the boiling water over your jewellery and let it sit. After the water cools down, lift the colander out of the pot and place your jewellery on a soft cloth. Take the cotton t-shirt and gently rub your jewellery by using small circular motions. Put away the jewellery when it is completely dry.

Method to clean diamond jewellery

Lotions, soaps, creams, skin oils, hairsprays and everyday grime leave a film on your rock and alter the optical properties of the diamond. If not cleaned regularly, they may accumulate into a thick layer of gunk and cause your rock to lose its brilliance and sparkle.

So here is a method to clean your diamond jewellery at home.

What you will need

• Club soda
• Mild liquid detergent
• Soft bristled toothbrush

How to do it

Add a few drops of mild dish detergent to some club soda in a plastic cup or bowl. Mix it well to create a soapy solution. Due to the loosening effect of the bubbles in club soda, the built up grime will get loosened from behind your diamonds. Soak the jewellery in the solution for around 20 minutes. After removing it, scrub off the remaining dirt and grit from the back of the stones. Make sure that the setting isn’t scratched. Soak the jewellery one last time for another 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry with a soft cloth.

If you do not have club soda handy, you can also soak your bauble in a solution of mild liquid detergent and water. See to it that the solution is warm. To clean the diamonds always use a soft bristled toothbrush. Now, swish the ring around in the solution and rinse in warm water. Make sure that your small jewellery pieces don’t gush down the drain along with water. Either close the sink hole while washing or wash your pieces in a sieve. You can also use a wooden toothpick to gently and carefully push away the dirt from the rock and the setting.

You can also clean your diamond with ammonia if it isn’t fracture filled or anyhow damaged.

You can also apply the above method to clean your gemstones jewellery but you don’t need the liquid soap. Only club soda, a soft bristled toothbrush and a soft cloth will work wonders.
